Denied Access To Rental Car But Still Charged For The Rental

On June 19, 2009 I went to The MN International Airport to pick up a vehicle I had reserved at Hertz Rental Car Co. I was informed at the desk that they ran a credit check and that my credit was not good enough to rent a vehicle, since I was using a debit card. Although I was disappointed I was o.k. because they have a right to limit use of their vehicles.
The problem is that they placed a hold on my bank account for $197.00, the cost of a 3 day rental. This hold prevented me from renting another vehicle because I was leary about leaving town with my money being held up. I needed the vehicle to drive down to MO to see my cousin who was being sent to Iraq by The US military for 18 months. This was not a vacation but this was family business. I may never see my cousin again.
To add insult to injury, on Monday Hertz actually debited my account for the rental amount plus an additional $50.00 which caused me to have an overdraft fee. Even though my bank went into my savings to cover the overs they still charged me a fee, which according to them is more of a service charge which is less than an overdraft fee.
I started calling Hertz on Friday but I was told by the 3 rude people that I talked to that nothing could be done until Monday. Mind you, Hertz advertises that they are available 24/7. Each time I have called the 4 different phone numbers I have had to wait at least 30 minutes per call and then I get nothing but BS. Today is now Thursday, day 7 of this SAGA and I still have yet to be reimbursed my $$$.
This is definitely a form of white collar crime. This is why I am against bailing out companies because it is their coniving and deceitful practices that have caused their demise.
There are other complaint web sites, in which other people have experienced similar nightmares. I am probably better off having not rented from them because the people who actually rented vehicles were bilked even worse than I was. I don't understand how they can just take my money without any repercussions. I am going to notify every media source
that I can, so that others won't fall victim to their low life tactics.
I am going to the bank and ask for a stop payment and I have contacted the BBB but they have already received several hudred complaints.
